Something That Says “Spring”

April 7, 2014 No Comments

Yesterday was a nice change of pace.  We took the Sunday School kids to Philadelphia for a museum visit.  Lucky for us, we arrived early and had a few minutes to enjoy the outdoors.  It was a beautiful sun shiny day.  Just a bit chilly.  In other words, just like the first days of Spring should be.

When I got ready to create today, I wanted to make something different.  Just like Spring, it was time for a little change.  I love cards but, sometimes I need to do something else with my paper.  I tossed around several ideas in my head, not able to get a picture to form, before I just decided to start, hoping a plan would come to me.

Well, my plan started with the egg.

Spring Mixed Media by theartfulinker.com using Backyard Basics

I had colored it a couple of months ago to show someone.  And then, I put it aside thinking I could come back to it for Spring or Easter.  The egg is from Backyard Basics.  I stamped it in Versamark and then embossed with Black embossing powder.  It was then colored using a Blender Pen, Coastal Cabana and Soft Sky ink.  Today, I cut it out and then loaded it with Dazzling Details not worrying about smoothing it.  This way it has an interesting sparkly, rough texture.  This is a “you’ll have to trust me moment” as it doesn’t really show up in the photo.

So what’s on my mixed media?  Hmm – I’m tempted to say just about everything but that’s not helpful.  I started with designer paper from the Fresh Prints stack.  Then, I painted it with a mixture of white acrylic paint and Soft Sky, Pool Party and Coastal Cabana ink refills.  Stamps from Happy Watercolor and Tape It were used to add texture.  These images were heat embossed.  In addition, you’ll notice bits of Retro Fresh washi tape.  This helped to expand the color palette as it was looking awfully blue.

The Early Espresso tree was cut freehand and then run through the Woodgrain embossing folder.  And the pieces for the nest were cut using the Stampin’ Trimmer.  I used Soft Suede and Baked Brown Sugar.  Interwoven with these strips were bits of Retro Fresh washi tape, Gold Bakers Twine and Gold Sequin Trim.  I had accidentally heated one of the loose sequins while setting some embossing powder.  I liked how it curled and “tarnished” to a soft gold shade.  So, I proceeded to heat all of the loose sequins and then a small strip of them leaving the threads hanging.  You know those birds pull everything they can carry into their nests.

The final details were two pieces from the Essentials Wooden Elements.  The banner piece was swiped with the Metallic Gold ink pad.  Then I wrote “Spring” with a permanent marker.

I may have to do a seasonal collection of these.  They’d be fun as a grouping on a wall or even to change out with each season.

Hope you had a great weekend.  Did you remember to sign up for my newsletter?
