And one of the questions that came up was “how do I know where to put images/elements on a card?” Today, I thought I’d help you with that answer by sharing the Rule of Thirds and a FREE gift.

Rule of Thirds

In design, there is a concept called the Rule of Thirds,

The idea being that you divide your canvas in thirds

and place your elements along the intersecting lines.

Our canvas is the card front.

Rule of Thirds Examples

This Butterfly Wishes card (HERE) that I shared a few days ago

is an example of a card using the Rule of Thirds.

Notice how design elements are at or very near the points

where the horizontal and vertical grid lines intersect.

Pairing the thirds with elements being off center creates

a kind of movement on the card front.

Yesterday’s Magical Mermaid card (HERE)

had much more going on.

But, it still fits the design principle.

Look at how the elements are placed relative to the axis points.

And think about how your eye tracks across the card.
